Liebster Award

liebsteraward

About a week ago, I was nominated by Silvachief over at The Geek Clinic for the Liebster Awards. Admittedly, I’m not really familiar with it (incidentally, I found out these series of Liebster chain posts had been going around way back from 2010, or perhaps even further back), but here’s a basic rundown.

The Liebster award is intended to give some exposure to small blogs with less than 200 followers. The rules are as follows:

1. Link back to the blogger who nominated you
2. Answer the 11 questions given to you by the blogger who nominated you
3. Nominate 11 other bloggers with less than 200 followers
4. Go to the blogs you nominated and notify them of your nomination
5. Give your nominees 11 questions to answer.

So without further ado, here’s my answer to Silvachief’s questions.

1. If you were no longer able to blog about what you do now, what would you blog about?

If I’m no longer able to blog about anime, games, visual novels and anything pertaining to the Japanese visual subculture, I do have other interests I can blog – ranging from music, films and even TV series. I might blog about technology too though I lack the monies to buy gadgets just to review or to provide impressions.

2. What is your favorite quote from an anime/visual novel/other?
As I’m into anime/manga/games/visual novels/light novels, and I feel I shouldn’t ignore quotes from the other media as well, I’m going to list down all my quotes respectively. I can’t remember all the quotes from the titles I had watched/played (fyi, I’m also not the type to copy-paste interesting quotes), but the ones here are definitely the more memorable ones; some of them inspiring, some astonishing, some humorous, and some of them downright trolling.

Anime:
“Listen up! Let’s say you drink too much strawberry milk, and have to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, but it’s cold outside your bed. You don’t want to get up, but the urge to urinate is just too strong! You make up your mind to go! You run to the bathroom, stand in front of the toilet, and let loose! You think that all your life has led to this moment! But then you realize. It isn’t the bathroom! You’re still in bed! That feeling of lukewarm wetness spreads like wildfire! But you don’t stop! You can’t stop! That’s what I’m talking about! That’s the truth of the strawberry milk! Do you get it?”
~Sakata Gintoki (Gintama) and his philosophy on “strawberry milk”

“If I don’t have to do it, I won’t. If I have to do it, I’ll make it quick”
~Oreki Houtarou (Hyouka) and his life motto

“Mad scientist. It’s so cool. Sonuvabitch”
~Okabe Rintarou (Steins;Gate)

Manga:
“People SHOULD be doubted. Many people misunderstand this concept. Doubting people is simply a part of getting to know them. What many people call “trust” is actually giving up on trying to understand others. Rather than “trust”, it is actually APATHY.”
~Akiyama Shinchi (Liar Game)

Games:
“Blacker than a moonless night, hotter and more bitter than hell itself… That is coffee.”
~Godot (Ace Attorney: Trails and Tribulations)

“First, I whip it out, then I thrust it with great force, every angle it penetrates, then with great strength, I ram it in! In the end, we are all satisfied, and you are set free.”
~Dante (Devil May Cry 4) as he received a new weapon

Light Novels:
“Okay. Then I’ll remember pilot Charles, forever.”
~Fana (Remembrances for a Certain Pilot)

“I’m going to find her whatever it takes. Whatever. It. Takes. If I have to kill every single person on this planet, I’m ready to engage in mass genocide at the drop of a hat.”
~Hoshino Kazuki (HakoMari)

Visual Novels:
“If you hesitate when asking a question, you’re better off not asking. When you hesitate, you’re afraid of looking in to the other person’s heart. If you look into someone’s heart unprepared, you won’t be able to handle it. The ones who open up their heart want someone to take responsibility. They want to be worried together, angry together, cry together, laugh together… So if you’re just casually asking, you’re better off not doing it. It’s better for both parties that way.”
~Mare (Hoshizora no Memoria)

“Fools only look ahead, crybabies only look behind, envious children only look up and scornful asses only look down on others… but they’ve all got tunnel vision!”
~Yuuji (Grisaia no Kajitsu)

“Here I come, King of Heroes! Do you have enough swords in stock?”
~Shirou (Fate/Stay Night)

3. If you could gather everyone on your blogroll in one place, where would it be and why?
Brunei, my country, since I feel not many people know about it. I will show everyone the island of unknown mystery brimming with mystical legends such as dragons and elves.

4. A 2-way dimensional rift has opened outside your house. Which fictional universe would you want it to connect to?
A place like Aria’s Neo Venezia seems pretty nice. It’s soothing and relaxing, and if there’s a place I want to go to “recover” from my chaotic and hectic life – Neo Venezia’s my top choice. If I’m adventurous, I would live in a fantasy world like Fairy Tail too.

5. What is the story behind your avatar name?
I wanted a name that sounds Japanese or just simply, Asian-like. The name should also be vague enough, fitting to use as a code name on some sort of secret operation; a name but not truly a genuine name in the truest sense. “Kai” emerged in one corner of my mind when I was brainstorming, and it sounds just about right – I didn’t base it on any other existing medium, it’s too vague for me to base it on one specific title anyway; furthermore, the name is simple, yet vague, but “open” enough to be interpreted as just as anything, yet retaining it’s Asian feature – it’s perfect.

6. Do you have any phobias, fictional or otherwise?
A bit of height phobia?

7. If you could conquer any one country, which one would it be?
Japan. And once I had done so, I will do the very one thing that I had in mind for a while – spreading more Japanese games and visual novels outside of Japan to increase accessibility for foreigners and supporting localizations *proud*

8. Which super power would you like to have?
Visual power to see through objects. I swear I don’t have any perverted objectives.

9. If you could be any other fictional race, which would you be?
Dragon.. does that count?

10. Which 3 animals would you most like as pets?
Dragon, cerberus and werewolf.

11. You find yourself in the waiting room at The Geek Clinic. Why are you there?
I was diagnosed with multiple personality disorder – one where I’m the normal, humble and innocent Kai you all see now, the second personality where I’m a perverted lolicon and chased after roris and the third personality where I got obsessed with oppai and would be glad to jump into these lovely “valleys of love”.

So it seems that it’s my turn now to ask the questions. I however, won’t be nominating anyone, I’m not even sure how many followers the bloggers I know had. I’ll just leave all my questions here, anyone is free to answer them.

1. Are you a light novel reader?
2. Who is your favorite video game composer?
3. Is there any anime you watched which motivated you to learn something?
4. Do you collect anime merchandise? (figures, posters, blu-rays, cards, etc…)
5. What do you think of Vocaloid music?
6. Is there any manga/light novels/visual novels that you would like to have an anime adaption?
7. If you’re given the chance to design a mascot for your blog, how would you design him/her?
8. What’s your top five favorite anime?
9. How many game consoles had you owned?
10. You found a Death Note lying in front of your house. What do you do?
11. If given the power to live eternally, would you go for it?

  1. As I’m addicted to answering questionnaires, I’ll give it a go. Most boring answers ever, here I go!

    1. Are you a light novel reader?
Nope. Never read a light novel (or even a manga) in my life.

    2. Who is your favorite video game composer?
New World Computing team (Rob King, Steve Baca, Paul Romero, Jennifer Wang and others). They wrote (or, occasionally, carefully lifted from other works) the soundtracks to Might and Magic and Heroes of Might and Magic series. Might and Magic VI (NOT “Heroes of”) is my all-time favorite game OST.

    3. Is there any anime you watched which motivated you to learn something?
    No, not really.

    4. Do you collect anime merchandise? (figures, posters, blu-rays, cards, etc…)
No, I don’t even own a single physical copy of any anime or visual novel. I buy translated visual novels from JAST and MangaGamer in digital form, and torrent the anime.

    5. What do you think of Vocaloid music?
I’ve never heard a Vocaloid track.

    6. Is there any manga/light novels/visual novels that you would like to have an anime adaption?
Considering how piss-poor VN adaptations I’ve seen usually are, not particularly. It would be interesting to see a Sharin no Kuni anime.

    7. If you’re given the chance to design a mascot for your blog, how would you design him/her?
I have no artistic side whatsoever, except for occasional (terrible) writing, so I wouldn’t even know where to start. I can’t imagine what I’d want my mascot to be.

    8. What’s your top five favorite anime?
Well, this is easy cause I’ve only seen about a dozen. In no particular order:
    – Welcome to the NHK
    – Puella Magi Madoka Magica
    – Mononoke (not the Princess one xD)
    – Ghost in the Shell (the original movie)
    – Fate/Zero

    9. How many game consoles had you owned?
Two. The first one was a NES hardware clone called Dendy, the second one was Sega Mega Drive. Then I got my first PC, and never really wanted another console.

    10. You found a Death Note lying in front of your house. What do you do?
My lawyer instructed me not to answer this question. :)

    11. If given the power to live eternally, would you go for it?
Only if I got to be forever young.

    • Thanks for the answers :p
      1) But I guess you read VN :p
      4) Hmm, I don’t either, though I collect figures.
      5) Might had heard of it if you watched Black Rock Shooter anime.
      6) I’m more interested in a HakoMari anime… oh yea, you don’t read LN :p Indeed, not many VN I would like to have an anime adaption myself now that when I think about it.
      8) What do you think of Ghost in the Shell TV series?
      9) You can play most games on the PC already indeed, aside from some consoles-exclusive ones.
      10) Wise :-)

      • I have only seen the first season of SAC so far, and my impressions are mixed, tbh. There seem to be two main components to any GitS story: the cool and hip cyberpunk stuff with all the action, gadgets, etc., and a philosophic side dealing with questions of humanity and cyberization.

To me, the movie balances those two components perfectly. But further adaptations are a bit skewed: Innocence tries to go deeper into philosophy with mixed results (all those excessive quotations weren’t really necessary for the most part), while SAC is more into action with only a dab of philosophy. A bit dumbed-down.

SAC is still pretty good imo, and it got a lot better at the end of the Laughing Man arc, but there’s a few annoyances. I don’t like comic relief in serious shows, so I hated Tachikomas right from the start. The Major’s usual costume (a glorified swimsuit) is also hard to take seriously. But mostly it’s okay.

Nothing is as iconic and poignant as the moment in the movie when the tank shoots the evolutionary tree carved into a wall. I get goosebumps just from remembering that. :)

        • Watched Ghost in the Shell quite a while ago and to be honest, I probably need a rewatch or something soon. But indeed, from what I can garner, so far GitS (the first movie) is probably the best introduction to the series one could ever hope for – it doesn’t exaggerate way beyond it’s theme and like you said, managed to balance it out between the two themes. Also, something I noticed, characterizations for the movie as compared to the series is quite different, especially The Major and Batou. In the movies, there are much more stoic while in the series, they have more of a personality, though I ironically like their stoic selves more in the movies, I felt it fits quite well with the overall atmosphere. Though the different characterizations in the TV series also worked too I guess, with the series being slightly dumbed-down.

  2. Seriously, why’d you even answer question 8 with words? I think the picture said quite enough lol

I’d definitely like to know more about Brunei and life there. I mean, it is something far away from me and a place I’ve never experienced. I think that’d be cool.

    • I originally just wrote the article without the pictures. I found that picture by luck when I was looking for some to “break” my post, and since my written answer is already there, I feel no reason to remove it, lol.

I always like to make a joke at Brunei being “unknown mystery” because it’s partly true, lol. When I was watching a Japanese mini live concert here (it’s a very small concert, not “those” concert you expected), the guitarist was asked by the translator what did he think of Brunei, and he said “Outside’s hot, and the inside’s cold” and we had a good laugh, because that’s just so humorously true… xD Because there’s no seasons here, it’s like having summer all year round.

  3. Might as well give it a go while I’m here xD

    1.) Yes. :D

2.) I’ve grown very attached to the Sting team in charge of the Dept. Heaven series. The J-RPG magic that their games give off is something else really.

3.) Usagi Drop made me want to learn how to do ayatori! Summer Wars prompted me to learn Hanafuda Koi-Koi

4.) Not anymore, though I did used to collect anime posters

5.) If I had to choose as to whether I like it or not, I’d say I like it. Tell your world is surprisingly catchy.

6.) A lot I think. Off the top of my head Wakusei no Samidare for manga-anime, HakoMari and Zaregoto Series for LN-anime, and for VN-anime, I think Katawa Shoujo would be interesting, or World End Economica

7.) I haven’t given that much thought into a mascot for my blog really (now it’s Yuina, probably) Though if I could design my own, then it’d probably be a genki girl with short pink hair xD

8.) Kara no Kyoukai, Monogatari Series (all of ’em, lol), Cross Game (newly added, so good~), Ookami-san, and Fate/Stay Night

9.) Just one; a slim PS2. I’ve always been more of a handheld gamer.

10.) Look up and see if Ryuk was just dropping it for lulz again.

11.) I’d pass, though I’d also be missing a prime opportunity for a blonde loli to come end my immortal lifespan

    • 1) I know you do xD Aside from us, I barely know any other LN reader >_< Within the blogsphere at least.
      3) Hanafuda, reminds me of Chihayafuru, lol.
      4) Ahh, anime posters. I tried to avoid anime figures now due to lack of space, lol. But I'm actually looking more into anime posters now. There are a lot however, Clear poster, Cloth poster, Can poster, Wall Scroll, not sure which one is good.
      5) If I were to pick a favorite, I had to re-listen and re-check the track names, there's just too many Vocaloid albums, in fact, I'm downloading more as we speak, lol. They are quite fun to listen to :p Also recently, I had been playing Project Diva F. Rhythm Game + Vocaloid ftw.
      6) I would love to see HakoMari as an anime too but not sure how would they adapt it due to it's bizarre format. But chances are, if it's a studio like Shaft, it might work out xD
      9) Well, I had fun with the PS3, been recently playing Project Diva F aforementioned, but can get where you're coming from too.

      10)

      11) Lol, I had been WAITING for someone to make a reference to that blonde loli joke xD

      • 1.) I only know of one other blogger, and two people personally, so yeah, there aren’t really that many of us xD

3.) I’d love to learn Karuta eventually :D

4.) I’d go for Wall Scroll for ease of setting aside.

5.) I actually played the first Project Diva on the PSP a couple of years ago, and the only song I remember taking away from that was Cantarella(?), not sure if that’s the correct title, lol

6.) Shaft and ufotable would be immensely ideal. I’ve also thought of Lerche (DanganRonpa, Unbreakable Machine Doll) or Silver Link (BakaTest, Accel World) as potential studios that could do wonders with it. Worst case scenario it falls in the hands of J.C. Staff

11.) LOL, I just had too xD

        • 1) LN community is so obscure T_T
          4) Ease of setting indeed, but isn’t it the long vertical types? It won’t match with certain areas of my bedroom walls, lol.
          5) Ahh, it wasn’t localized as I recalled. Project Diva F (PS3/Vita) was localized and my favorite track is “Dye”, ironically not Miku’s song, but Luka’s :p
          6) J.C Staff made some good works, but definitely not the ideal selection especially for a series like HakoMari.. D:

  7. Hello fantastic website! Does running a blog similar to this take a great deal of work?
I’ve no understanding of computer programming however I had been hoping to start my own blog
in the near future. Anyway, if you have any suggestions or techniques for new blog owners please share.
I understand this is off subject nevertheless I simply
    needed to ask. Thanks!
